I’m so excited! Thanks to Wonderbra, my mum and I will be joining thousands of walkers at the MoonWalk London on 11th May.
The MoonWalk is a marathon and half-marathon power walking event to raise money and awareness for Walk the Walk breast cancer charity. The event starts at midnight and all participants – women and men – proudly display their specially decorated bras.
Mum and I are doing the half-marathon distance. I’m really looking forward to doing it together because one of my unofficial New Year’s Resolutions was to encourage her to be more active this year. I think that the MoonWalk offers a brilliant challenge and completing the necessary training will encourage us both to be more active in our everyday life, instead of waiting until we get to the gym or studio to start exercising.
Today I downloaded the training schedule for the first month and we held our first MoonWalk Planning Meeting to set goals and to work out how to fit in the training with our other commitments. We would like to complete the Half Moon in 3 hours, which means we need to get used to walking at a 13 min/mile pace, we walk quite a bit already but I’m not sure how fast I am so that will be something to test out this weekend! Good news is that in the first two weeks the training walks are just 2 or 3 miles long, which should fit in nicely to our daily commutes.
Something else I need to start thinking about is what to wear. I’m really happy with my Kinvaras for running but I’m not sure whether I’ll need different shoes for long distance walking.
Every year the MoonWalk has a different theme. This year is Fly Me To The Moon, so I need to think of a spacey way to decorate my bra. Wonderbra will be providing one of their T-Shirt bras to every walker, this is what I’ll be working with – any suggestions are very welcome!
Have you every taken part in a MoonWalk or long distance walking event?

Oh how brilliant! I did the full Moonwalk about 10 years ago and it was a lot of fun. The atmosphere is great and walking through Central London in the dark in your bra is quite a surreal experience.
I’m sure you can do 13 min miles as well with some practice – I walked the last 10 miles of the London Marathon in between 13-14min miles and that was on the back of run/walking 16 miles before that so you should be fine! Enjoy – it’s a great event.
And given that I run/walk most of my long distances in Kinvaras I would have thought they’d be fine. Unless you particularly want an excuse for a new pair of shoes of course
A good excuse for buying new shoes is always welcome
My only worry with the Kinvaras is that my feet get quite cold in them when I’m not running (or run/walking), but perhaps that’s more an issue with the socks rather than shoes.
I’m really looking forward to it – I did the Edin-bra MoonWalk in 2009 which was a fabulous way to see the city for the first time! Even if I did go to the Whisky Experience a few hours before the walk started – good pre-race fuelling
Sounds like a very fun “race” to do! I love the idea! I think I`d probably decorate the bra to look like outer it`s from outer space, adding some stars, then perhaps a spaceship along the straps or down the cup and a moon to the top of if? Just an idea.
I think you`ll be fine with the 13 minute pace and as for shoes I agree with Becca, either keep those Kinvaras or perhaps use a pair of Nike Frees as those are worn by all the tourists and people just walking a lot and they seem to like them.
Nike Frees are a good call, I was thinking of buying a pair as my ‘walking around aimlessly’ shoes for weekends etc, and I do like the way you can customise them – I could get special DASH ones!
The big NikeTown store in London isn’t too far from my office so I might take a trip there this week to try them on.
Stars would be a great idea for the bra
Maybe on the waistband of my leggings too?
Oh! Customized Free`s that sounds great! So much fun too! And yes, do add the stars on your leggings! I`m looking forward to your final outfit, post some pictures of the pieces, please!
Glow in the dark stars …. lots of them!
Astronauts
Star Wars
Rocket Ships
Flash Gordon
Planets
Comets
The Man (or woman!) in the Moon
Metallic Silver
Ziggy Stardust!
Ziggy Stardust!!! How could I have not thought of that myself – what a great idea!
The David Bowie exhibition at the V&A starts in March, I can go on a research trip there
Fate would have it that my wife looked over my shoulder just as I got to the end of this post – and just in time to see the skinny, presumably hot, with large breasts in a wonderbra. Hilarity ensued.
As far as the walk goes, good luck – and when in God’s name does that walk come to Michigan, err, so I can walk it with my wife…
Oops! My boss has a habit of walking past my desk whenever I’m looking at something on Amazon. He probably thinks I spend my whole day doing nothing but online shopping!
I think the MoonWalk started off with a bunch of women doing the New York Marathon in their bras, maybe start a campaign to get them to do a Michigan marathon too? http://www.walkthewalk.org/Challenges/NewYorkCityMarathon
